Roman Catholic Church...
After the Greek empire fell, the Roman Catholic Church took over. For centuries, churches were the only center of learning.
The only truth came from God through the Bible and the interpretations of the priests. God was more reliable than physical senses. Many believed that the atomic theory implied atheism so they did not believe in it. Whenever someone offered physical evidence that disagreed with the church’s official teaching, church scholars dismissed them. The only science they allowed was Aristotle’s physics. They agreed with his four elements theory because it could fit in their world view with God still being in control.
