Based on his studies on copper carbonate reactions, Proust discovered that each pure compound has its own characteristic elemental composition. For example, the ratio of elements never changed even though its mass changed. H2O would always be a ratio of 2:1, no matter its mass. This led to the Law of Constant Composition, which was not widely accepted at the time.

Own Characteristics? His studies showed that each compound had it's own characteristics, no matter if you change it's mass or not.

Law of Constant Composition...Which states that all samples of a given chemical compound have the same elemental composition by mass.
