Clockwork...
Descartes came up with the ideas of rationalism and deism. Rationalism eventually led to faith vs. reason. This meant that people were comparing religion to what they were discovering. Faith eventually started losing and lost most of it’s effect in Europe. Deism deals with the “Clockwork Image.” This means that God wound up the world and gave it laws, and then sat back and let the world run. Deism kept expanding while new discoveries were being made. The idea that everything was created by a god was accepted by almost everyone, but because we don’t “see” God with us now they believed he uses the different laws to keep the world running. But he does not interact with us today. People began to believe that if you know the laws, you know what God knows, so you don’t need God.
