Dalton is most known for his Law of Multiple Proportions. This law led directly to the proposal of the Atomic Theory in 1803. His atomic theory proposed that elements consisted of tiny particles called atoms. It states an element is one of a kind because all atoms of an element are identical. It also says that all the atoms that make up the element have the same mass. All elements are different from each other due to differing masses. His theory also said that chemical reactions involve the rearrangement of combinations of atoms. Dalton recognized the existence of atoms of elements and that compounds formed from the union of these atoms. Therefore, he assumed that simplest ratios would be used in nature and came up with a formula for water of HO.

Law of Multiple Proportions...When two elements combine with each other to form more than one compound, the weights of one element that combine with a fixed weight of the other are in a ratio of small whole numbers.
